Madeira was selected Europe’s Leading Island Destination for the second time in a row. This award was unveiled last Saturday evening during the World Travel Awards gala held in Athens, Greece.
World Travel Awards (WTA) was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised as the “Oscars” of tourism, a hallmark of quality that sets the benchmark to which all others aspire.
World Travel Awards supports, promotes and develops the global travel and tourism industry by identifying and rewarding excellence and inspiring its practitioners to continually raise the standards of their product and service offering. The voting process is online with votes coming from qualified executives working within travel and tourism and the consumer travel buyer. Votes cast by travel professionals count as two votes and all votes are internally audited to ensure the validity of each individual vote.
Three hotels in Madeira have also been awarded in this gala, namely Choupana Hills Resort & Spa (Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort), The Vine Hotel (Europe’s Leading Design Hotel) and Pestana Porto Santo (Europe’s Leading All Inclusive Resort).
On the overall, Portugal has received 16 awards, among which that of Europe’s Leading Airline to Africa and to South America (TAP Air Portugal), Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel (Vila Joya), Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination and Cruise Port (Lisbon), Europe’s Leading River Cruise Company (Douro Azul), Europe’s Leading ‘Landmark’ Hotel (Hotel Bairro Alto), Europe’s Leading Villas Resort (Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel) and Europe’s Leading Tourist Board (Turismo de Portugal).
